Play Fair - Be Nice!

Coaches, players, parents, and other invited guests,

Welcome to the 2008 Quartz Hill Shootout.  There are two sides to the complex.  This year, the U-10,  U-12, and U-14 games are being played on the west side of 30th Street.  The U-16 and U-19 games will be played on the east side of 30th street.  The home team will occupy the North or West side of the field.

This year's theme is a carry-over from last year.  It is very simple.  Play Fair - Be Nice!  As we enter the competitive games I would like everyone to remember the reason that we are all here.  To participate in an incredible sport, on some of the best soccer fields in the country, while we support our children and volunteers who all made this event possible.  We have a unique opportunity again this year as our children compete against teams from many diverse cities.  Nothing creates a longer-lasting memory than an incredibly competitive game played in a FAIR and SAFE manner.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank my staff, made up of ALL VOLUNTEERS, for their time and dedication to make your weekend as positive and memorable as possible.  I would also like to remind you that Negative comments will not be allowed toward ANY OF OUR VOLUNTEERS (INCLUDING THE REFEREES) and might result in your touchline seat being moved to the nearest parking lot.  You are encouraged to cheer, not only for your own team, but in response to great plays made by the other team!  I am asking all of the coaches to again join me in setting the example by demonstrating Positive Coaching!  Encourage your teams to play to the referee's whistle and play through that "bad call" you believe you just received.  Complaining about calls will only turn the referees' attention toward you and your team and distract the referees from the task of officiating your game.  There will be no protests!

Be mindful that we have close to 600 games that will be played this weekend and we must keep the games on time.  You can help us do that by moving after your game is over away from the sidelines to the ends of the field as soon as possible .  Please move to the staging areas on the designated shootout fields as soon as possible after your first two games on Saturday.  As a reminder, any player who is sent off in a game will not be allowed to participate in the shootout portion of our tournament and must remain in the parking lot for the next scheduled game (with a parent or guardian if a minor).

There is a strong chance that it will be relatively warm.  Be watchful of children who might be suffering from heat exhaustion.  In case of emergency, please locate one of our volunteers who can summon the on-site medical staff.  Please make sure you wear sun block and keep hydrated.  For those of you not familiar with this area, the sun and wind can overcome you quickly.

Thank you again for participating in our tournament.  I hope all of you have a most enjoyable and memorable weekend!
